Humble Heart № 9 (Black Tea)
Humble Heart № 9 (Black Tea)
Facts
This organic black loose leaf tea comes from the relatively new Shan-Yun cultivar (No. 24), which is based on the Yongkang-Shan mountain tea plant (Camellia sinensis f. formosana), native to Taitung in Taiwan. Taitung’s Luye tea area is located between the central and coastal mountain ranges at an elevation of around 200 meters, where the water is pure, the red soil is rich in minerals, and rainfall is moderate—creating an ideal environment for tea cultivation. The Shan-Yun cultivar is an ancient Taiwanese tea tree variety that has undergone 20 years of refinement by TRES (Tea Research and Extension Station), resulting in the creation of Taiwan Tea No. 24. However, Liao family's grandparents had already been cultivating this tea long before TRES began their work on this species.
Source
I've always loved Liao family's tea because they have a brightness, lightness, and clarity that seem to reflect their down-to-earth and simple character. Their small family-run tea farm is a labor of love, with Mr. Liao—the father—being the primary caretaker. His farming approach is organic, guided not by scientific data but by years of hands-on experience. He carefully observes the weather, the growth of the tea, and adjusts his care accordingly, always interacting with nature in a respectful and intuitive way.
Flavor Profile
The Shan-Yun tea cultivar exhibits subtle aromas of almond, coffee, moss, flowers, and mushrooms, which create a unique, smooth, and mellow character. After 20 years of organic farming, the Liao family's tea has shifted from its wild, untamed roots to become pure and delicate, with a soft, clean mouthfeel. It's not sharp or bitter at all, but instead offers a deep yet approachable flavor, perfect for everyday enjoyment, whether during work, rest, or moments of relaxation in the evening. Its pure cultivation environment ensures that you can enjoy this tea frequently, without worrying about quality or health.
