What is organic tea?

Organic tea is grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). To be certified, tea must meet certain legal standards set by the USDA, the EU Commission or other entities depending on the country. This is a complex and costly process which is easier to undergo for big corporates. Small family run businesses oftentimes cannot or don't want to put up with this level of bureaucracy and omit a certification. However, keep in mind that this does not necessarily mean, uncertified tea is of a lesser quality. Oftentimes the opposite is the case: see naturally- and wild-farmed tea.

What is natural / naturally-farmed tea?

Naturally farmed tea is cultivated using farming methods that closely mimic natural ecosystems. These methods avoid synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. Each tea leaf is hand-plucked without the use of heavy machinery. Naturally farmed tea typically emphasizes environmental sustainability, but does oftentimes not carry organic certification for the above stated reasons.

What is wild-farmed tea?

Wild-farmed tea is grown in semi-wild conditions, often in forests or biodiverse environments, where tea plants coexist with native vegetation. Unlike conventional farming, wild-farming integrates natural ecosystems into the cultivation process. Human intervention is reduced to a minimum, refraining from pruning, and sometimes even weeding and irrigating. This method avoids any chemicals and instead relies on the natural fertility of the soil and ecosystem. Each tea leaf is carefully selected and hand-picked. Wild-farmed tea often has unique flavor profiles and strong healing properties, influenced by the clean and rich terroir. It is the peak of artisan craftwork and ecological tea cultivation with the smallest environmental impact.

Why do you specialize on Taiwanese teas?

In order to curate teas of the highest quality, an extensive body of knowledge is essential. This includes not only the tea itself but the environment, climate, people, their intention, ideas and philosophy. This body of knowledge can only be built by physically spending a significant amount of time on the ground. Since we happen to live in Taiwan, Taiwanese teas are the logical choice.

On the flip side, we have insufficient knowledge about China, Vietnam, Laos and other interesting tea countries. To keep our our promise to deliver tea experiences of the highest quality possible, we limit ourselves to Taiwanese tea curations.

Who are the people behind satotea?

satotea is run by Shao & Enan. We curate the teas, maintain the blog, website and social media, shoot & edit our films, create music and artwork, run the web shop, go to the postoffice and keep our tea room open for you. If you are curious, you can read more about our personal story here.

Where are you located? Can I visit you?

We are located in Taitung City along Taiwan's east coast, just a few minutes from the breathtaking pacific ocean. Our tea room is open seven days a week, all day long. However, please contact us before visiting. We also offer extended tea experiences, tea meditations, events and workshops, and have a simple guest room available for a deeper dive or retreat. This is our location.

Do you offer international shipping?

Yes, we offer worldwide shipping for a flat fee of 10 EUR. An order value of 75 EUR and above lets you even enjoy free shipping. All our teas are carefully packed and shipped from us here in Taiwan. This includes a thoroughly filed customs declaration for a quick and smooth delivery, no matter where in the world you want to enjoy our tea. All shipments are made by plane and should not take longer than 7 - 10 days to arrive.

Why is your tea more expensive than conventional tea?

All our teas are hand-picked and processed with paramount quality in mind. They are hand-crafted art pieces available in small quantities only. The whole chain from cultivating the land, over harvesting, sourcing the tea, spending time with it in order to understand it's essence, to then present and ship it to you will never be as cheap as conventional tea. A corner stone of our approach is to ensure the richest flavor possible without exploiting nature. This means some of our teas are harvested only once a year as opposed to up to six times on big tea farms, where not healthy soil is the tea plant's food but big amounts of fertilizer.
