satotea's FAQ Guide:

What is satotea?

satotea is a tea room for quiet transformation. Through gongfu-style brewing, tea meditation and our experiential classes, each session turns into a mindful journey toward self-inquiry. With our naturally- and wild-farmed teas, paired with our highly individual approach, we offer a gateway into your inner world. For deeper exploration, our retreats offer space to slow down and reconnect with your true self.

What can you do for me?

Modern life pulls us away from ourselves and leaves us stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted and lost. satotea offers a quiet alternative — a return to simplicity, nature and presence. Instead of being on the chase in the external world, trying to escape the noise, we invite you to slow down and face life as it is. Even a single cup of tea with us can shift something within, offering calm, clarity and the quiet reminder that you are already enough.

Who is this for? Is it suitable for beginners?

You don’t need to know tea. You don’t need to meditate. But you need to feel a quiet longing, have been searching outward for peace, only to realize the real work lies within. If you’re open-minded, curious and willing to face both light and shadow, you’ll feel at home here. satotea is not a space for short-lived comfort — it is about continuous change. It is for those ready to belong — belong to themselves.

How does tea meditation work?

Within satotea's quiet practice of repetition, awareness and presence, there is no fixed method, no rigid teachings to follow. Each session adapts to your needs. We listen. We observe. Whether in tea meditation, brewing class, during a retreat or long-term mentorship, the process — rooted in clarity, honesty, and humanity — remains alive and individual. We use naturally- and wild-farmed teas to reflect the purity of the transformation itself. Over time this simple ritual becomes a mirror. You begin to notice more. Sense finer. See clearer. And in that, you begin to change — naturally and without force.

What is organic tea?

Organic tea is grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). To be certified, tea must meet certain legal standards set by the USDA, the EU Commission or other entities depending on the country. This is a complex and costly process which is easier to undergo for big corporates. Small family run businesses oftentimes cannot or don't want to put up with this level of bureaucracy and omit a certification. However, keep in mind that this does not necessarily mean, uncertified tea is of a lesser quality. Oftentimes the opposite is the case: see naturally- and wild-farmed tea.

What is natural / naturally-farmed tea?

Naturally farmed tea is cultivated using farming methods that closely mimic natural ecosystems. These methods avoid synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. Each tea leaf is hand-plucked without the use of heavy machinery. Naturally farmed tea typically emphasizes environmental sustainability, but does oftentimes not carry organic certification for the above stated reasons.

What is wild-farmed tea?

Wild-farmed tea is grown in semi-wild conditions, often in forests or biodiverse environments, where tea plants coexist with native vegetation. Unlike conventional farming, wild-farming integrates natural ecosystems into the cultivation process. Human intervention is reduced to a minimum, refraining from pruning, and sometimes even weeding and irrigating. This method avoids any chemicals and instead relies on the natural fertility of the soil and ecosystem. Each tea leaf is carefully selected and hand-picked. Wild-farmed tea often has unique flavor profiles and strong healing properties, influenced by the clean and rich terroir. It is the peak of artisan craftwork and ecological tea cultivation with the smallest environmental impact.

Who are the people behind satotea?

satotea was founded by Shao & Enan and is now run mostly by Shao herself. You can read more about her personal story here.

Where are you located? Can I visit you?

We are located in Taitung City along Taiwan's east coast, just a few minutes from the breathtaking pacific ocean. Our tea room is open seven days a week, all day long. You can book a tea meditation session, retreat or workshop here.

Do you offer international shipping?

Yes, we offer worldwide shipping for a flat fee of 10 EUR. An order value of 75 EUR and above lets you even enjoy free shipping. All our teas are carefully packed and shipped from us here in Taiwan. This includes a thoroughly filed customs declaration for a quick and smooth delivery, no matter where in the world you want to enjoy our tea. Your shipment is delivered via airmail and should not take longer than 7 - 10 days to arrive.

Why is your tea more expensive than conventional tea?

All our teas are hand-picked and processed with paramount quality in mind. They are hand-crafted art pieces available in small quantities only. The whole chain from cultivating the land, over harvesting, sourcing the tea, spending time with it in order to understand it's essence, to then present and ship it to you will never be as cheap as conventional tea. A corner stone of our approach is to ensure the richest flavor possible without exploiting nature. This means some of our teas are harvested only once a year as opposed to up to six times on big tea farms, where not healthy soil is the tea plant's food but big amounts of fertilizer.

How to brew loose leaf tea for great results?

We cover this and similar questions in several articles in our blog. This steadily growing knowledge base is available for you for free.
