A Life Skill for the Anxious Age: Tea Meditation in Taitung
Shao YūgenWhen Assumptions Fall Apart
I used to assume that anyone enrolling in a two-day intensive Tea Meditation Workshop would already have a strong interest in meditation or tea. It seemed reasonable to expect that someone willing to invest two full days would at least have some foundation. Jeffrey dissolved that assumption. The night before, he wrote to ask if I was available the next day. Early the following morning, we met in the tea room. After listening to his situation and what he was searching for, we began the workshop within half an hour.
He had come from Singapore with no background in meditation or tea. He was traveling in Taitung, and somewhere inside he simply felt that the time had come to learn how to meditate. He described it as a life skill, something that could accompany him anywhere, at any stage of life, independent of external conditions. That clarity did not come from prior study. It came from an inner readiness.
The Essential Skill for the Anxious Age
In ancient times, survival meant knowing how to find water in the wild and build a fire. As civilizations evolved, literacy became a fundamental skill. Today we live in an era shaped by rapid information flow and artificial intelligence that constantly reshapes industries and economies. Anxiety has become almost ordinary. Many people quietly worry about being replaced, falling behind, or becoming irrelevant.
In such an age, perhaps the most essential skill is the ability to settle one’s own mind each day.
This is the heart of my Tea Meditation Workshop in Taitung. It is not primarily about mastering traditional tea techniques. Tea is the medium, not the goal. What we cultivate is the ability to return to oneself, to remain present, and to observe life with steadiness and clarity. The practice of mindful tea becomes a doorway back to the center of one's own.
From Understanding to Direct Experience
Before we began, I reflected on a simple but important question: how can someone with no prior experience understand awareness, and more importantly, enter into it naturally? Instead of offering definitions or theories, I asked him what he loved. We spoke about his travels and his reading habits. From those familiar territories, we built bridges. I allowed his own lived experiences to become the entrance into awareness.
Over twelve hours across two days, rather than filling him with concepts, we shaped the learning around his temperament and rhythm. Our sessions became interactive and experiential. Through conversations, reflections, and repeated tea practice, seemingly separate areas of life—study, work, personal struggles—began to connect. Gradually, a simple perspective emerged: life itself is not complicated. Understanding is available to anyone who is alive. The shift lies in perspective.
On the second morning, before preparing tea, Jeffrey shared a story from university. There had been a subject he struggled with deeply and failed the first time. After serious reflection, he realized the issue was not intelligence but the absence of wholeheartedness. The following year, he chose to truly apply himself and achieved a strong result.
I asked him what he meant by being wholehearted.
He said that being wholehearted meant placing one’s heart fully into the task, thinking carefully, allowing the whole body to participate in the experience. Within that immersion, something subtle is felt, and that feeling remains inside, transforming into genuine understanding.
I invited him to brew the tea in front of him with that same wholehearted attention. It was only the second time he had ever brewed tea. Yet as I watched, his body and mind naturally settled into the movement. There was a quiet steadiness in his gestures that surpassed technical skill. Being in the moment was so powerful.
When a Cup of Tea Continues
When he stepped out of the tea room, the tea he had brewed with full presence did not end there. Life will certainly bring confusion and challenges again. Yet once someone has directly experienced that clarity, it does not disappear. It waits quietly within, ready to guide when needed.
The external world is loud and urgent. We rarely pause long enough to listen to ourselves, let alone face discomfort with gentleness. Brewing a cup of tea with awareness becomes a way of returning to the origin of the heart. In that spacious and open inner field, each moment can feel like the first time.
This Tea Meditation Workshop is not measured by how much knowledge you accumulate. What matters is whether, at some point, you truly step inside the experience. All teachings exist only to support that step. Jeffery has entered, his path will unfold naturally.
Feedback from Jeffery
I read about "tea and relaxation" which Taitung is probably the place to do it, and I chanced upon Satotea.
The 2 days session took place in an environment that is not "noisy" - a cosy open indoor space with tea set and a small board for teaching.
The session is not about getting everything right like you need in school. Shao focused on understanding, and most importantly, conversation. I personally value the small talks and personal sharing throughout the session, which certainly made learning more relatable.
Getting the mind focused through tea session was nice to me, and while it was difficult to put things together prior to the training, Shao did a great job to piece things together, and i really felt enriched. It was amazing to "feel" the learnings at the end of session when the A-Z just fell in place.
Thanks Shao for the enriching and detailed session. Finally, thanks a lot for the hospitality.
